IOWA CITY, IA -- Florida Atlantic University was defeated by the University of Iowa, 79-52, Sunday night in Iowa City, IA. FAU (2-3) was held to just 28 percent shooting as the Hawkeyes won their season opener. Earnest Crumbley led the Owls with 16 points. Jeff Cowans scored 13 while Avery Headley added 12.
FAU scored the first points of the game on a Headley layup, but never again led as Iowa quickly took control of the game. The Hawkeyes went on an 11-0 run over a 9:52 span in the first half that saw the lead balloon to 23-6. FAU would trail 32-16 at the half.
Iowa started the second half on an 13-2 run that was capped off by a jumper by Chauncey Leslie that made it 45-18 with 16:23 to play. Trailing 47-21, FAU went on a 10-0 run to pull to within 47-31, but that was as close as the Owls would get.
"Iowa played terrific defense against us," said FAU head coach Sidney Green. "They took away a lot of our first options."
"I was pleased with the way our defense continued to force turnovers. The fact a team like Iowa committed 23 turnovers shows a lot about the character of (FAU)."
Iowa shot 49 percent and held a 48-29 advantage on the boards. The Hawkeyes also went 28-for-37 from the line compared to FAU's 9-for-12. FAU did force Iowa into 23 turnovers while committing 16.
Crumbley went 4-for-12 from beyond the arc while Cowans scored all of his points in the second half.
Florida Atlantic returns to Boca Raton for its home opener November 27 against Nova Southeastern at 7:00pm at FAU Gymnasium.
