DES MOINES, IA -- Florida Atlantic University was defeated by Drake University, 74-62, Friday night in Des Moines, IA. The loss drops the Owls to 2-2 on the season. Earnest Crumbley led FAU with 16 points. Avery Headley scored a career-high 11 while Jeff Cowans had 10.
Drake sprinted out to a 12-2 lead 3:41 into the game and held the Owls to just one field goal until a layup by Avery Headley made it 12-4 Drake with 13:30 left in the half. Trailing 15-4, FAU went on a 7-0 run, capped off by a Drew Skeeter dunk with 7:47 left in the half, to draw within four points. However, the Bulldogs would close the half on a 16-4 run to lead 31-15 at the break.
Drake increased its lead to 57-33 on a free throw by Lonnie Randolph with 7:34 left in the game to take its largest lead of the night. Cowans would respond with back-to-back three-pointers to draw FAU to within 57-39. A free throw by Randolph at the 4:45 mark gave Drake a 65-43 lead which seemed to be enough at the time.
That's when the Owls responded with a 15-0 run over the next 3:38 to trail 65-58 with 1:06 left. Crumbley scored seven points during the stretch, including a pair of threes. Crumbley finished 4-for-7 from beyond the arc. The Owls would get as close as 66-60 with 36 seconds remaining before the Bulldogs closed on an 8-2 run.
"I was proud of the way our guys hung in there," said FAU head coach Sidney Green. "They never gave up, even when the shots weren't falling, which showed a lot of guts and character."
Each team shot 39 percent for the game. Drake outrebounded FAU 39-33 while FAU's 19 turnovers were just one more than Drake's 18. Drake shot 6-for-18 from beyod the arc while FAU went 43 percent (6-for-14) from long range.
Randolph led all scorers with 29 points, including 15-for-19 from the line. As a team, Drake went 28-for-38 from the line while FAU finished 12-for-17. Luke McDonald also chipped in 17 for the Bulldogs.
Florida Atlantic next plays at Iowa Sunday night in Iowa City, IA.
