WASHINGTON, DC - Sanchez Hughley posted his first career double-double to help the Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team to a 81-69 win over American University on Saturday.
Hughley and Shavar Richardson both had 10 points in the first half to lead FAU (2-1) to a 36-20 halftime lead. The lead ballooned to 23 early on the second half, but American raliied to within eight at 58-50 with 7:50 left in the game.
Six straight FAU points pushed the lead back to 14, but the Eagles pulled to within four with just over a minute remaining. Raymond Taylor hit two free throws, then grabbed a rebound, and hit Hughley for a layup to put the game away.
Hughley ended up with 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Owls. He was joined in double-digits by Greg Gantt (14), Taylor (14), Richardson (12) and DeMonte Simpson (10). The win is FAU's first road win since defeating Troy 99-93 on February 27, 2007.
