ELON, NC - The Florida Atlantic men's basketball team fell to Elon in overtime on Sunday in the championship game of the Mainland Regional of the EA Sports Maui Invitational.
For the second straight game, the Owls built a first half lead, holding an 11 point advantage late in the period, eventually taking a 31-22 edge into halftime. Defense was the key for FAU (1-3) in the first half, holding Elon (2-1) without a field goal for the final seven minutes of the half.
The two teams traded buckets early in the second half. A Stefan Moody jumper put the Owls ahead 39-27 seven minutes into the period. The Phoenix then scored 12 unanswered points to tie the game with 8:07 left on the clock. Another exchange of baskets ended with Greg Gantt hitting a game-tying jumper with 1:47 remaining.
From that point on, neither team scored for the remainder of regulation, though both sides had several open looks. The overtime period began with Elon scoring a bucket and the Owls answering the challenge with a score of their own. Ultimately, FAU was down a point with 15 seconds left, but turned the ball over. Elon hit a pair of free throws to go up by three and the Owls could not get off an attempt at a game-tying three.
Moody led all scorers with 22 points and had tied for the game high with eight rebounds. Greg Gantt (11) was the only other FAU player in double-figures. Jordan McCoy narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds.
FAU will host American in its regular season home opener on Saturday at 1 p.m. Live audio and live stats of the game will be available at www.fausports.com.
