PORTLAND, OR - Freshman guard Dennis Mavin scored 19 points in his first collegiate game, helping the Florida Atlantic men's basketball team open the 2010-11 season with a 70-63 win over UC-Davis on Friday.
Mavin scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half, helping the Owls overcome the loss of Greg Gantt, who was ejected early in the first half.
FAU got out to a quick start, scoring the first 10 points of the game, and led 31-24 at the half. UC-Davis scored eight straight points to take a 43-40 lead with 12:37 remaining. The Owls had regained the lead at 51-50, when Mavin scored six points during a 13-2 run to help FAU seize control.
The Aggies pulled to within five, but couldn't get any closer. FAU won its third straight season opener in the process. Alex Tucker scored 14 points and Brett Royster added 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds to become the fifth player in program history with 500 rebounds.
