BOCA RATON, FL - Mike Bell showed why he's the Atlantic Sun Conference Preseason Player-of-the-Year Thursday night as Florida Atlantic University defeated Florida Tech, 87-76, in an exhibition game at FAU Gymnasium in Boca Raton. The senior led all scorers with 23 points and grabbed a game-high 20 rebounds as the Owls played their second and final exhibition game.

Bell missed FAU's first exhibition last Saturday against Barry due to an injured left hand. Against Florida Tech, he went 8-for-20 from the field and 7-for-14 from the line to go along with four blocks in 33 minutes of action.

"Mike's a much better player than he showed tonight," said FAU head coach Sidney Green. "I thought his timing was a little bit off, which is expected since he missed a few practices."

The night wasn't just Bell's. Three other Owls finished in double-figures. Freshman Derrick Simmons scored 14 points and had seven rebounds. Quinton Young, a junior, had 13 points, including 3-for-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Young made eight of his 16 three-point attempts in FAU's two exhibition games. Senior Pierre Tucker tossed in 12 points. Rodney Webb scored nine points and had eight rebounds.

Ryan Maultsby and Titas Vainauskas each led Florida Tech with 19 points. Brad Rich added 17.

"We can use this game to build toward next week's season opener," said Green. "We have five very critical practices to get all the kinks out and be ready for FIU."

Florida Atlantic begins its regular season November 19 at Florida International. The game tips at 8:00pm and can be heard live on WLVJ 1040-AM.
