EL PASO, Texas - The Florida Atlantic men's basketball team lost to Marshall 63-59 in the first round of the Conference USA basketball tournament.

The Owls (10-22) got off to a slow start, as the Thundering Herd (11-21) built a 25-8 lead midway through the first half. FAU, bolstered in part by a 16-6 run, had trimmed the margin to six, 35-29 at the half.

In the second half, the momentum of the game went back and forth as FAU fought back to within striking distance and the Thundering Herd answered to reestablish a cushion. The Owls trailed 59-57 in the final minute and were able to grab a rebound, but Kelvin Penn's foot landed out of bounds, giving the ball back to Marshall.

After Marshall hit a pair of free throws, FAU had three looks at a three-pointer, but couldn't convert any of them. Another pair of Marshall free throws and a Justin Raffington layup accounted for the final score.

Marquan Botley finished with a game high 26 points. Pablo Bertone added 21 to end his FAU career with 1,153 points, good for sixth in school history. Mike Jarvis ends his tenure at FAU with the most head coaching wins (76) in program history. The Owls are expected to return four starters for 2014-15 season.
