HOT SPRINGS, AR - The Florida Atlantic men's basketball team lost to Troy 81-79 in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference basketball tournament.
The Owls (14-18) got off to a slow start, as the Trojans scored the first seven points of the game. Troy was able to maintain that advantage for much of the half, before a 7-0 FAU run tied the score at 27. The Trojans scored the next five points to regain the lead and went to the half ahead 36-30.
In the second half, the game went back and forth as the teams exchanged the lead on a couple of occasions. FAU led by one, when Stefan Moody scored eight consecutive points for the Owls as they fended a furious rally by Troy. The Trojans eventually tied the game at 59 and the two teams exchanged scores and the game was tied again, this time at 68. Moody missed a free throw, but Kelvin Penn eventually tipped in the miss to put FAU ahead with 17 seconds left. Troy drew a foul and hit a pair of free throws to tie the score. Moody missed a potential game winner to send the game to overtime.
Troy never trailed in the overtime, but FAU had another shot at the buzzer that would have forced a second overtime, but the shot missed. Moody scored a career high 29 points and Gantt added 19 points to end his career with 1,972 points, good for sixth all-time in Sun Belt history.
The Owls are expected to return three starters for 2013-14, their first in Conference USA.
