HOT SPRINGS, AR - The Florida Atlantic men's basketball team lost South Alabama 52-51 in the first round of the Sun Belt Tournament on Saturday.
Both teams started the game with sloppy play, but the Owls held a 10-5 lead with just under 13 minutes left in the first half. FAU scored just nine points the rest of the half and went to the break trailing 30-19.
A Gary Redus three-pointer gave USA a 42-28 lead with 12:14 left in the game, but the Owls rallied, with Greg Gantt pulling FAU to within three on a three-pointer of his own with 7:08 remaining. After the Jaguars pushed the lead to seven, the Owls scored eight unanswered points to take a 51-50 lead. Bryan Sherrer hit jumper to give USA the lead. Brett Royster's layup at the buzzer was long and the Jaguars escaped with the win.
Royster had his fifth double-double of the season, scoring 13 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. FAU ends the season with a 14-16 record and is set to return their entire roster, including all five starters.
