BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team battled, but lost to Southern Miss 60-49 on Sunday.
Justin Raffington scored a team high 14 points for the Owls (10-20, 5-10 C-USA). He was joined in double figures by Jackson Trapp and Marquan Botley, who both scored 11 points and Tyler Pate, who scored a career high 10.
Both teams struggled from the field, but USM (24-6, 12-3) built a double-digit first half lead on the strength of shooting 13-of-18 from the free throw line. Botley hit a three pointer just before the halftime buzzer to trim the Owls' deficit to 31-24 at the break.
USM opened the second half on a 12-2 run to take a 43-26 lead and appeared to have victory well in hand, but the Owls didn't wilt under the pressure from the Golden Eagles and fought back to within three points, but couldn't get any closer. USM made 7-of-9 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
