Gantt, Mattison and classmate Jordan McCoy were recognized in a pregame ceremony. The Owls (13-17, 9-11 Sun Belt) seemed to have difficulty overcoming the emotion of the evening, and fell into an early hole. FAU was able to remain close to some sloppy play on the part of the rival Panthers (16-13, 11-9). FIU eventually led by 10, 20-10 at the 11:05 mark of the first half.
It was at that point in the game that a member of the freshman class asserted himself. Stefan Moody scored all 14 of his first half points in the last 11 minutes and cut the Owls deficit to one, 31-30. A Mattison layup put FAU ahead 32-31 early in the second half. That continued what eventually turned into a 24-5 Owl run. The Panthers never got closer than eight points the remainder of the game.
Mattison had his first career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, Gantt added 16 points and five rebounds. Moody led all scorers with 28. The Owls will head to the Sun Belt Conference tournament as the no. 7 seed and will play 10th seeded Troy in a first round game on Friday, March 8.
The game is scheduled for a 9:30 p.m. eastern start. Live audio of the game will be available at www.fausports.com.
