BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic men's basketball team fell to Western Kentucky 78-69 on Thursday.
The Owls (14-14, 10-7 Sun Belt) came out sluggish at the start of the game, but trailed by only four at halftime 28-24. A Steffphon Pettigrew layup put the Hilltoppers ahead 61-56 with just over two minutes left in regulation, but WKU (18-12, 11-6) would not score for the rest of the half as FAU clamped down defensively. A Brett Royster jumper, followed by a Greg Gantt three-pointer tied the score at 61.
Pettigrew drew a foul with just over a second remaining, but missed both free throws to send the game to overtime. A.J. Slaughter took control in the extra session, scoring seven of WKU's 17 points and FAU was did not hit a field goal in the period. Gantt led the Owls with 19 points and Royster had 16 points and 10 rebounds.
The Owls will wrap up the regular season on Saturday when they face Middle Tennessee State. The game will start at 7 p.m. Live audio will be available at fausports.com.
