BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic men's basketball team's hopes for a bye in the first round of the Sun Belt Tournament were dealt a fatal blow with a 79-76 loss to South Alabama on Thursday.
The Owls (11-17, 7-8 Sun Belt) were unable to stop the Jaguar duo of Mychal Ammons and Augustine Rubit, who combined for 44 points and 21 rebounds. FAU was able to overcome a slow start and eventually get its offense going, with Greg Gantt making a pair of free throws to send FAU to the half up 35-30.
The second half was a game of runs as USA (16-10, 8-7) used a 12-2 run to take a 42-39 lead early in the period. FAU responded with nine unanswered points regain the lead. Another Jaguar run put USA ahead 63-56 with 4:40 remaining in regulation. A 9-2 Owls spree tied the game at 65, with Pablo Bertone providing the last four points of the run.
Both teams made two free throws in the final minute and potential game winning three by USA missed and sent the game to an extra session. The Jaguars began the overtime period with a three-point play and later scored five straight points. FAU was able to fight back and had a chance to tie but a three point attempt was short and the Owls had lost their third game in a row.
FAU will wrap up its regular season on Saturday against Troy. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and seniors Alex Tucker and Shavar Richardson will be honored in a pregame ceremony. Live audio and stats of the game will be available at www.fausports.com.
