DENTON, TX - The Florida Atlantic men's basketball lost to North Texas 66-57 in overtime on Thursday night. It was the third straight meeting in a row between the two teams to go to overtime.
It was another slow offensive start for the Owls (12-17, 7-11 Sun Belt) as they managed just one field goal in the first four minutes of the game. FAU's effort on the defensive kept the game close in the early moments. Once the Owls' shots began to fall, they quickly made up ground on the Mean Green (11-18, 6-12) and tied the game at 22. Dragan Sekelja put FAU up 35-32 late in the first half, but a Jordan Williams three-pointer just before the buzzer tied the score at the intermission.
The Owls scored the first eight points of the second half, but NT answered with a 10-0 run of its own to retake the lead 45-43. From that point, neither team had a lead bigger than four points for the remainder of regulation.
Greg Gantt scored a jumper in the lane to put the Owls ahead 57-55 with less than a minute remaining. Jordan Williams hit a pair of free throws to tie the game and both teams came up empty on their final possessions of regulation to send the game to overtime.
North Texas outscored the Owls 9-0 in the overtime period to secure the win. FAU will return home to face UALR on Saturday. Game time is set for 7 p.m. and live stats and live audio will be available at www.fausports.com. Tickets can be purchased by calling the FAU Ticket Office at 1-866-FAU-OWLS.
