TROY, AL - Shavar Richardson scored a career high 31 points, but the Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team lost to Troy University 86-80 on Saturday night.
The Owls trailed 41-34 at the half despite 16 from Shavar Richardson, due to 64 percent shooting from the field by the Trojans. Richard Delk led Troy with 13 points at the break, one of three Trojans in double figures before the intermission.
The two teams battled throughout the second half and while the Owls stayed close, even tying the score, they were never able to overtake Troy. FAU was behind by a dozen with five minutes remaining, a Greg Gantt triple pulled the Owls to within four, 79-75 with 94 seconds remaining. After a Brandon Hazzard jumper, Richardson was fouled while shooting a three-pointer and drained all three free throws to make the score 81-78 with 51 ticks left.
The Owls managed to draw an offensive foul on the next Troy possession, but a Richardson three-ponter which would have tied the game fell just short. Hazzard made both of his free throw attempts to help put the game away.v
FAU (14-13, 10-6 Sun Belt) will end the regular season with a two-game homestand, beginning on Thursday, February 25 against Western Kentucky. The game will begin at 7 p.m. and will be televised on Fox College Sports.
