LAFAYETTE, LA - The Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team suffered another close loss, this one 58-57 to Louisiana on Saturday.
FAU (12-16, 7-10) struggled to start both halves, falling behind by as many as nine in the first and not making their first field goal until nearly nine minutes into the game. The Owls managed to pull back within two at 22-20, when the Ragin' Cajuns (10-17, 6-10) scored the game's next seven points to stretch the lead back out to nine.
Neither team could find its offensive rhythm at the start of the second half, but UL seemed to find itself first, taking a double digit lead, 38-28 with 14:37 on the clock. However, the Owls rallied to tie the score at 46. The score was knotted at 50 when Jordan McCoy finished a layup, grabbed a defensive rebound and then assisted on a Greg Gantt three-pointer that put FAU ahead 55-50.
UL answered with a bucket, then Gantt put the lead back to five with a running hook shot. A pair of Ragin' Cajuns free throws was followed by the Owls being unable to capitalize on three offensive opportunities. Another UL field goal cut the lead to one and after a foul, the Owls missed the front end of a one-and-one. The Ragin' Cajuns grabbed the rebound and Elfrid Payton made a difficult layup to put UL ahead. The Owls committed a turnover on their final possession.
The Owls will make their final road trip of the regular season when they travel to Denton to face North Texas on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m. eastern time.
