BOWLING GREEN, KY - The Florida Atlantic men's basketball team started out hot, but couldn't maintain its quick start and eventually fell to Western Kentucky 64-57 on Thursday night.
The Owls (11-15, 7-6 Sun Belt) led by as many as 11 in the first half, led by Jordan McCoy who scored 10 points in the first 20 minutes. FAU lead 32-24 at the break and was 35-26 just over a mintue in the second half when WKU (9-17, 5-8) went on a 15-6 run to tie the score at 41.
Back-to-back buckets by Raymond Taylor and Dennis Mavin put FAU back ahead by four, but the Hilltoppers refused to go away and at one point late in the second half the lead switched between the two teams on nine straight baskets. Teeng Akol put FAU ahead for good with a layup with 2:41 remaining.
WKU missed three of four free throws during a stretch late in the game, but the Owls couldn't take advantage and FAU had its two game winning streak snapped. McCoy scored a team high 14 points, while Kore White matched his career high with 11 rebounds. Western Kentucky remains the only East Division the Owls have never swept a season series from. Alex Tucker had three assists and is now 9th all-time in Sun Belt history with 516 for his career.
FAU travels to Middle Tennessee to face the Blue Raiders at 6:30 p.m. eastern on Saturday. The game will be streamed live on ESPN3.com and live audio of the game will be available at www.fausports.com.
