MOBILE, AL - The Florida Atlantic men's basketball team lost a hard fought game to South Alabama, 72-71 on Saturday night.
The contest was a back and forth affair the entire way, with neither team leading by more than seven points. There were also 12 ties and 12 lead changes during the game. FAU's (11-15, 6-9 Sun Belt) biggest lead came with just under two minutes left in the first half, 31-25. From there, the Jaguars (14-9, 11-4) scored the final six points of the period to tie the game at 31.
South Alabama's had a seven point lead on two separate occasions, the second coming at 61-54 with eight minutes left in the game. However, a technical foul on Mychal Ammons led to a four point possession for the Owls and put them right back in the game. The two teams exchanged the lead several more times down the stretch. Jordan McCoy hit a pair of free throws to the Owls ahead 72-71 with a minute left. FAU was able to force a Jaguar miss on the ensuing possession, but was unable to secure the rebound and Augustine Rubit hit the putback to give USA the 72-71.
After a timeout, FAU had the ball along the baseline, but turned the ball over with 0.6 seconds left and USA was able to run out the clock. Greg Gantt had a game high 23 points and McCoy had 11 points and a career high 12 rebounds. Stefan Moody added 16 points and six rebounds.
