BOCA RATON, FL - A severe offensive drought in the second half was the catalyst for the Florida Atlantic men's basketball team's 76-56 loss to FIU on Saturday.
In the early going, the game was a repeat of the recent meetings between the two teams as there were eight ties and six lead changes in the first 20 minutes and neither team could build a lead bigger than six points. Raymond Taylor hit a runner at the buzzer to put FAU up 29-28 at the half.
The second half began in similar fashion as the margin never grew above five for either team in the beginning. Greg Gantt hit a three-pointer at the 13:02 mark to pull FAU within two at 42-40. That would the last Owls field goal for more than seven minutes, and the Panthers sealed the game during that time.
The loss was the first in six games against FIU for the Owls. Gantt led all scorers with 21 points and Jordan McCoy led the team with nine rebounds.
FAU will continue its three-game homestand on Thursday when they host Denver. The game starts at 7 p.m. and live audio and stats will be available at www.fausports.com.
