NASHVILLE, TN - Earnest Crumbley's three-pointer with 32 seconds remaining lifted Florida Atlantic University to an 80-78 victory over Belmont University Monday night in Nashville, TN. Crumbley led FAU with a season-high 20 points and had a career-high six three-pointers in the win. The Owls improved to 11-8 overall and 8-4 in the Atlantic Sun Conference while Belmont dropped to 8-11 overall and 5-7 in the A-Sun.
FAU led by as many as nine points in the first half before Belmont closed the half on a 5-0 run to trail the Owls 44-40 at the break. The Owls increased the margin to 51-44 with 16:54 to play before the Bruins came back with a 6-0 run. FAU would go back in front by six points with 6:51 left before Belmont mounted yet another rally. A 5-0 run cut the FAU lead to one point with 4:56 remaining and a three-pointer by Adam Mark gave Belmont a 77-75 lead with 1:40 left.
A tip-in by Robert Williams with 1:10 left tied the game at 77 and a free-throw by Adam Sonn with 47 seconds left gave Belmont a 78-77 lead. That set up FAU's next possession in which Crumbley knocked down his sixth three-pointer from the top of the key.
Five Owls finished in double figures as Raheim Brown had 15 points. Williams scored all 13 of his points in the second half while Andre Garner chipped in 12. Jeff Cowans had 10 of his 11 points in the first half.
FAU shot 51 percent compared to Belmont's 49 percent. The Owls held a 31-30 advantage on the boards while committing 15 turnovers.
All five of Belmont's starters scored at least 12 points with Sonn leading the team with 20 points. Wes Burtner had 15 while Mark scored 14.
Florida Atlantic will next face A-Sun leader Troy State February 2 in Boca Raton.
