NASHVILLE, TN - Florida Atlantic University built a 15-point lead and then nearly overcame an 11-point deficit as it fell to Lipscomb University, 68-66, Sunday afternoon in Nashville, TN. FAU's Mike Bell led all scorers with 18 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Pierre Tucker added 17 for FAU as it fell to 4-13 overall and 4-6 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Lipscomb was led by Jason Guyette's 16 points and improved to 9-7 and 4-5 in the A-Sun.
The Owls could seemingly do nothing wrong at the outset as they built a 29-14 lead at the 8:11 mark of the first half. From that point, the lead slowly eroded and was trimmed to 33-31 with 3:46 left in the half. A three-point play by Tucker 40 seconds later pushed it back to a 37-32 advantage before the Owls settled for a 43-40 halftime lead.
FAU went ice-cold to start the second half. Lipscomb took its first lead, 44-43, on a Cameron Robinson layup at the 17:58 mark. The Bisons ran off five more points for a 9-0 start to the half and led 49-43 with 15:30 remaining. They pushed it to 53-44 less than two minutes later. A Bell layup with 10:31 left in the game was FAU's first field goal of the half and pulled the Owls to within 53-48.
The Bisons responded with an 11-5 run and took a 64-53 lead with 4:36 to go. The lead was also 11 at the 2:52 mark before the Owls rallied. Tywain McTyer made two free throws 10 seconds later to make it 68-59. FAU forced a turnover on its press, and Bell scored to cut the deficit to seven. After another Lipscomb turnover and a Bell three-point play, the lead was 68-64 at the 2:17 mark.
With 1:40 remaining, Kahleaf Watson made a pair of free throws to make it 68-66. Neither team would score the rest of the way as FAU's final chance with three seconds remaining ended with a turnover on an inbounds pass with the length of the court to go..
