BOCA RATON, FL - The Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team successfully defended its home court, defeating North Texas 86-81 on Saturday.
The Owls (6-13, 2-6 Sun Belt) jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead, with Carlos Monroe scoring eight of those points. North Texas (12-6, 3-4) fought back to tie the score at 13. The two teams traded buckets the remainder of the half, with the biggest margin for either team coming when a Sanchez Hughley three point play gave FAU a 38-32 with 2:05 left in the half. A Dez Willingham jumper just before the buzzer cut the Owls' lead to 42-39 at the break. Monroe led all scorers with 10 points in the half.
The second half proved to be a repeat of the first as neither was able to establish firm control of the contest out of the locker room. FAU led 49-47 with 17:15 remaining when the Mean Green scored the next 11 points to take the lead. The Mean Green lead was still at 10 points with 7:07 left in the game when FAU ran off 15 of the next 20 points to tie the score at 78. North Texas led 81-78 with 62 seconds left when Monroe drained two free throws to cut the UNT lead to one. After a Mean Green turnover, Paul Graham scored on a sweeping lay-up to give the Owls an 82-81 lead. Ben Bell missed a potential go ahead jumper and UNT was forced two foul. Sanchez Hughley hit both free throws to put the lead at 84-81. Willingham missed a three-pointer and Xavier Perkins hit two more free throws to provide the final margin.
"This was a total team effort. Guys did what it took to win," said FAU head coach Rex Walters.
