BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University defeated Belmont University, 69-66, Saturday night in Boca Raton, FL, as Andre Garner led the Owls with 20 points. Raheim Brown had 13 points for the Owls while Jeff Cowans added 11 as FAU improved to 10-7 overall and 7-3 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Belmont (8-9, 5-5 A-Sun) was led by Adam Sonn who scored 20 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Wes Burtner's attempt for a game-tying three-pointer in the closing seconds came up short as the Owls prevailed for the victory.
Garner finished 7-of-9 from the field and 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. The Owls as a team made nine of 21 three-point attempts.
Both teams played to a 35-35 tie at the half before the Bruins opened up with an 8-0 to start the second half. Trailing 43-35, the Owls replaced their starters with the second unit, which proved to be one of the keys to the game. Sparked by six points from Nick Neumann and four from Avery Headley, the Owls went on a run that would eventually give them a 62-52 lead with 5:46 to play.
An 8-2 run by Belmont over the next 2:31, helped by two treys from Burtner, pulled BU within 64-60. A three-pointer by Cowans with 2:51 left upped FAU's margin to seven. FAU still led by seven points with under a minute to play before Belmont mounted one final rally. Four free throws by Sonn pulled the Bruins to within 69-66 and a missed jumper by Brown gave the Bruins a chance to tie the game on their final possession. However, Burtner's three-point attempt was rebounded by Daryl Dingle as the Owls held on for the three-point victory.
"I'm happy we were able to get the victory after the two losses we suffered last week," said FAU head coach Sidney Green. The Owls were coming off a double-overtime loss at Troy State last Saturday and a six-point defeat at Birmingham-Southern on Wednesday.
FAU shot 49 percent compared to Belmont's 43 percent. Although FAU was outrebounded 36-28, they forced Belmont into 15 turnovers. The Owls committed just 10 miscues of their own.
Along with Sonn, Adam Mark tossed in 17 for Belmont. Burtner added 16 points including four treys.
Florida Atlantic next plays at Central Florida Tuesday at 7:30pm.
