BOCA RATON, FL - A furious rally late in the game was not enough as Florida Atlantic University fell to Troy University 99-93 Tuesday night in Atlantic Sun Conference action in Boca Raton. Quinton Young led FAU with 21 points, and Mike Bell added 20 to go along with 10 rebounds. Bobby Dixon led Troy with a game-high 25 points. Troy led 93-77 with 2:08 left in the game before the Owls ran off 12 straight points to pull to within four with 27 seconds to go.
FAU (3-12, 3-5 A-Sun) scored the first four points of the game before the Trojans came back with seven straight and led 7-4 at the 17:26 mark. FAU's final lead came at 18-17 with 12:37 left in the half as the Trojans opened up a 37-26 lead with 5:30 remaining in the half. Troy (6-11, 4-4 A-Sun) owned the same margin two more times before settling for a 47-40 halftime lead.
Bell had 15 points before committing his third foul with 4:27 left in the half, sending him to the bench for the rest of the half.
Dixon made one of his seven three-pointers to put Troy up 65-57 with 14:15 left in the game. The Owls responded with a 7-0 run to make it 65-64 at the 12:43 mark. Troy then ran off six straight points as it built its lead back into double-figures.
The late rally featured a pair of threes by Pierre Tucker as well as some turnovers off of full-court pressure. The run concluded on a Kahleaf Watson lay-up with 27 seconds left to make it 93-89. Watson finished with 14 points, all in the second half.
The Trojans did not allow the Owls to get any closer as they went 6-for-6 from the line to account for their final six points.
Troy did most of its damage from beyond the arc, finishing 13-for-26 from three-point range. The Owls went 9-for-30 as Young had five treys. Troy shot 59 percent from the field while FAU was 51 percent. The Owls outrebounded the Trojans 35-31.
Florida Atlantic next faces UCF Thursday night in Orlando. The game will be a rematch of UCF's 73-70 last Thursday at FAU Gymnasium. The game can be heard live on WLVJ 1040-AM and www.fausports.com.
