Boca Raton, FL - Former Florida Atlantic University baseball pitcher R.J. Alvarez has been named one of the Los Angeles Angels' top 10 minor league prospects for the upcoming 2013 season by Baseball America.

Alvarez, the organization's top pick in the 2012 major league baseball draft, was named the organization's No. 8 prospect and was also cited for having the best fastball of any pitcher in the Angels' farm system.

After helping FAU capture the 2012 Sun Belt Conference (SBC) regular-season championship, Alvarez went on to post a 3-2 record with a 3.29 earned run average in 23 appearances as a relief pitcher for the Class-A Cedar Rapids Kernels in Iowa.

Alvarez earned first-team All-SBC honors, won five games and posted eight saves during his junior season in 2012.

FAU begins the 2013 season on Friday, February 15 against the University of Cincinnati at the FAU Stadium in Boca Raton.
