Boca Raton, FL - Florida Atlantic University redshirt sophomore pitcher Kevin Alexander holds a slim one-point lead heading into the final five events of the 2012 baseball team's Iron Owls Award activity. This annual event helps identify the strongest Owls' baseball player - both mentally and physically - during fall offseason workouts.
The Iron Owls competition included a teams' challenge for the first time. Teams were timed on how fast they could set up the field for batting practice. Coming out on top was the team that featured junior Jake Meiers, sophomore Robert Buckley, senior Mike Tomasi and freshman Kevin Perez. Working together, the players were able to set up the field in six minutes and 27 seconds.
Placing second was the team of seniors Alex Hudak, Mike Albaladejo and Ahmed Garcia along with freshman Ricky Santiago. Third-place honors went to juniors R.J. Alvarez, Michael Sylvestri and Gregg Bennis, and freshman Julian Loret de Mola.
Alexander has compiled 338 points over the course of the eight completed events. The Coral Springs native has a one-point lead over Sylvestri. Garcia stands in third place with 334 points, while defending Iron Owl champion Alex Hudak is in fourth place at 323 points. Sophomore Geoff Jimenez rounds out the top five with 300 points.
This marks the fourth year for FAU Baseball's Iron Owl Award competition. Former player Lou Morey earned top honors in 2009 and 2010.
