Boca Raton, FL - Junior pitcher Kevin Alexander has jumped out to an early lead after two events in the Florida Atlantic University baseball program’s 2012 Iron Owl Competition.

This annual offseason event features eight tests that identify the strongest FAU baseball player -- mentally and physically.

Alexander clocked the fastest time (2:13.60) during the 880-meter dash at the track and field complex. The Coral Springs native also posted the highest score in a quiz that identifies the player who knows the most about his teammates.

Those two victories have given Alexander 149 points and a 35.5-point lead over senior catcher Mike Spano (113.5 points). Spano tied sophomore pitcher Austin Gomber for second place in the teammate quiz. Sophomore pitcher Bo Logan had a runner-up time in the 880-meter dash and stands in third place (113 points) in the competition.

Other top Iron Owl contenders so far this fall are senior pitchers Michael Sylvestri (109) and Gregg Bennis (106.5). View the first 2012 Iron Owl Award standings here.

Future events will award points based on physical strength, knowledge of the game and academic performance.

Former Iron Owl Award winners include Lou Morey (2008 and 2009), Alex Hudak (2010) and Ahmed Garcia (2011).
