Any championship season is filled with many dramatic moments and fantastic finishers. That certainly was the case for the 2012 Florida Atlantic University baseball team as it captured the Sun Belt Conference's regular-season title -- the Owls' second league crown in the last three seasons.
FAU compiled a 32-22 record, marking the 14th consecutive winning season for the program. The team had a 19-8 mark in SBC play.
FAUSports.com looks back at the top 10 highlights from the successful 2012 season. The No. 3 featured highlight is junior outfielder Nathan Pittman's game-tying, two-run homer in a late-season game against the University of Arkansas-Little Rock on May 13.
The Scene: Tied atop the Sun Belt Conference standings after dropping three consecutive games, the Owls found themselves trailing UALR 8-6 when Pittman delivers one of the key at-bats of the season.
Supporting Information: After FAU grabbed an early lead, UALR came back with an eight-run fourth inning to take an 8-6 advantage. Pittman's home run propelled the team to a key road victory that halted the three-game losing streak - the longest of the season - and kept the Owls top the SBC standings by one game. The team went on to win the final two games of the regular season for its second league title in the last three seasons.
The Play: Shaking up the Owls' batting lineup, Coach John McCormack moved Pittman to the No. 9 spot for the series finale against UALR. The move pays off with a six-run first inning to grab the early lead. However, the host Trojans came back with a big inning of their own, an eight-run fourth frame to take an 8-6 lead. Then, Pittman delivers with a momentum-changing, two-run home run over the right field fence to tie the game in the sixth inning. The Owls score four more runs to win the game 12-8 and regain sole possession of first place in the conference standings.
