Boca Raton, FL - Any championship season is filled with many dramatic moments and fantastic finishers. That certainly was the case for the 2012 Florida Atlantic University baseball team as it captured the Sun Belt Conference’s regular-season title -- the Owls’ second league crown in the last three seasons.
FAU compiled a 32-22 record, marking the 14th consecutive winning season for the program. The team had a 19-8 mark in SBC play.
FAUSports.com will look back at the top 10 highlights from the 2012 successful season. The countdown continues with the No. 6 highlight: Junior first baseman Mark Nelson’s performance in the FIU series to open Sun Belt Conference action from March 16-18.
The Scene: Mark Nelson earned Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week honors after leading Florida Atlantic to a three-game road sweep over South Florida rival FIU. The series sweep helped set the tempo for FAU’s regular-season conference championship season.
Supporting Information: Nelson led the Owls to a sweep over FIU, the co-preseason SBC favorite, with 11 runs batted in and three home runs. He was one of four Owls’ 2012 players to earn the conference’s Player of the Week Award.
The Play: After defeating FIU 5-1 in the series opener, FAU fell behind 4-0 in the second game. That’s when Nelson began his hot play with a two-run home run in the sixth inning. An inning later, the Orlando native blasted a go-ahead grand slam to cap off six-RBI, two home-run performances in a 9-5 come-from-behind victory. Nelson continued to produce from the middle of the lineup in the series finale with a RBI single in the third inning. Then, with the Owls leading 4-2 in the sixth inning, he connected on a three-run home run to secure the three-game sweep.
Key Stat: Nelson led the Sun Belt Conference with 33 runs batted in during league play -- 11 of those RBIs coming in the March FIU series.
