Boca Raton, FL - Seven Florida Atlantic University baseball players have carried their 2012 season's success over to this summer, being selected to play in the Florida Summer Collegiate League's All-Star Game. Three players will be starting in the game on Tuesday, July 17, at Sanford Memorial Stadium in Sanford.
Playing for the South All-Star team will be junior infielder Robert Buckley, senior first baseman Mark Nelson and senior catcher Mike Spano, all members of the Orlando Freedom, along with senior pitcher Michael Sylvestri of the Winter Garden Diamond Dawgs and signee Tyler Rocklein of the Winter Garden Diamond Dawgs.
"This is a well-deserved honor," said John McCormack, FAU's head baseball coach. "This recognition continues to show the hard work and dedication our guys have in improving during the summer."
Nelson will start the all-star game at first base after leading the Freedom with a .372 batting average and 21 runs batted in. He has also legged out seven doubles and two triples. Buckley has scored 14 runs while hitting .300 in 21 games for the Freedom. Spano ranks third on the Freedom with a .294 batting average and four doubles.
Sylvestri has posted a 3-1 record with a 2.21 earned run average in five appearances for the Winter Garden Diamond. The right hander has started four contests and recorded 28 strikeouts in 20.1 innings. Rocklein, an outfielder, will be a South All-Stars starter after having three home runs and 23 RBIs.
Rounding out the honorees, Keller will be the starting designated hitter after recording 10 doubles for DeLand in the first half of the summer season. Keller is also hitting at a .282 clip with 15 runs scored. Meiers is unbeaten in three decisions for DeLand. The right hander has compiled a 2.67 ERA and allowed just three extra-base hits. Meiers has made six starts and tossed 30.1 innings.
FAU captured its second Sun Belt Conference regular-season championship in the last three seasons with a 32-22 record and 19-8 mark in league play in 2012.
