June 7, 2014
BOCA RATON, Fla. - Florida Atlantic University shortstop Mitch Morales was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 29th round of the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft today.
Morales has been a starter in each of his first three years for FAU Head Coach John McCormack, playing in 142 career games. The Wellington native has 133 career hits with 67 runs scored and 53 runs driven in.
In 2013, Morales hit .301, starting each of FAU's 64 games. He played in 27 games in 2014, battling multiple injuries throughout his junior campaign.
Morales becomes the third Owl to be drafted by San Diego, joining L.J. Biernbaum (2002) and Brennan Hervey (1996). In 2011, Morales was drafted in the 42nd round by the Washington Nationals, but elected to come to FAU to increase his stock. He is the fifth shortstop to be drafted out of FAU since 1996.
Morales joins fellow junior Austin Gomber in this year's draft class. Gomber was selected in the fourth round by the St. Louis Cardinals.
