BOCA RATON, Fla. (June 6, 2014) - Florida Atlantic University ace pitcher Austin Gomber was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals as 135th overall pick in the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft today. He is the fifth-highest draft pick in FAU baseball history.
"Being part of such a great program with so much tradition, it's an honor to be the fifth-highest pick in FAU history," Gomber said. "The draft history at FAU shows how good our coaches have done in their time there and will do for many years to come."
Gomber, a 6-foot, 5-inch left-handed junior, has a career ERA of 3.27 with 238 strikeouts in his three seasons as an Owl. The Winter Garden native had 14 wins in 244.2 innings of work this season and ranked among the Conference USA leaders in both strikeouts and strikeouts looking.
On March 14, Gomber recorded his first career complete game, striking out a career-high 10 Louisiana Tech batters as the Owls topped the Bulldogs 3-1 in Boca Raton.
Gomber becomes the 74th Owl and 35th pitcher to be drafted since the program's inception in 1984. He is the 19th pitcher selected out of FAU in the last 10 years.
"I couldn't be more excited for Austin," FAU Head Coach John McCormack said. "He has worked extremely hard both on and off the field and he deserves everything he gets. I look forward to watching him go through his professional career."
