Boca Raton, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University baseball team looks to get back in the win column and continue its strong play in midweek games when it travels to the University of Florida on Tuesday, May 7 at 7 p.m. in Gainesville.
The Owls stand 28-19 on the season, but lost the last two games to UALR in last weekend's home Sun Belt Conference series. The team suffered a 10-5 loss to the Trojans on Sunday, May 5 and a 14-10 setback on Saturday, May 4 after getting a season-high 19 hits in winning the series opener 9-4.
FAU has won five of its last six midweek games and is 8-3 overall in games played on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, including a 7-2 mark against Florida opponents. The team has scored midweek victories over the University of Miami (6-1, March 27), Florida Gulf Coast (9-8, February 26; 9-0, April 10); UCF (10-2, April 26); and Florida A&M University (8-3 and 15-3, March 5).
Individually, junior outfielder Tyler Rocklein leads the Owls' offensive attack with eight home runs, 33 runs batted in (RBI) and 17 doubles, while batting .292 in his first season in Boca Raton. Freshman outfielder/infielder Brendon Sanger has a team-best .339 batting average and 32 runs scored. Junior catcher/designated hitter Levi Meyer has driven in 23 runs and ranks second on the team with a .333 average. Senior outfielder Nathan Pittman has legged out three triples and scored 31 runs in the lead-off position in the lineup.
Senior first baseman Mark Nelson has connected on six homers and is second on the team with 32 RBI. Sophomore third baseman Ricky Santiago had two RBIs on May 5 against UALR and has 11 doubles for this spring. Senior catcher Mike Spanowas named to the midseason Johnny Bench Watch List by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission as the nation's top collegiate catcher.
FAU's pitching staff ranks second in the Sun Belt Conference with a 3.93 earned run average (ERA). Sophomore left hander Austin Gomber (4-4) has a 3.04 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 74 innings this season, while junior right hander Jeremy Strawn (3-2) has a 3.76 ERA in 64 innings. Senior reliever Hugh Adams is the program's all-time leader with 26 career saves, leads the league with 13 saves this season and was named to the midseason Stopper of the Year Watch List by the National Baseball Collegiate Writers Association.
Florida is 25-23 on the season and plays Florida A&M University on Monday. Taylor Gushue leads the Gators' offensive attack with five home runs and 31 RBI, while also batting .302 on the season. Casey Turgeon has also hit five homers.
