Boca Raton, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University baseball team will recognize its eight seniors during the final Sun Belt Conference (SBC) home series against UALR, starting Friday, May 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the FAU Baseball Stadium, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus.
A special Senior Day ceremony planned on Saturday, May 4 at 3:30 p.m. will honor Hugh Adams, Gregg Bennis, Corey Keller, Jake Meiers, Mark Nelson, Nathan Pittman, Mike Spano and Michael Sylvestri. This senior class has helped FAU to two SBC regular-season titles and an appearance in the 2010 Gainesville Regional, and enters the weekend with 128 total victories, including 69 wins in conference action.
First pitch for Saturday's game is scheduled at 4 p.m., while the three-game series will conclude on Sunday, May 5 with a game starting at 10:30 a.m.
Florida Atlantic stands 12-9 in SBC play and looks to bounce back from a 5-3 loss to Troy University on April 28. Overall, the team has a 27-17 record this spring.
Offensively, junior Tyler Rocklein helps provide power in the lineup with a team-high seven home runs and 31 runs batted in. He is batting .289 and his 17 doubles rank fourth best in the SBC this season.
Pittman leads the team with 10 stolen bases and 29 runs scored. He is hitting at a .313 clip and has recorded 26 RBI. Meanwhile, Nelson has connected on six home runs with 29 RBI on the season.
Sophomore Mitch Morales is batting .329, while freshman Brendon Sanger leads the team with a .333 average. Junior Levi Meyer eounds out the .300-or-better batting average at .312 and has legged out six doubles.
On the mound, FAU continues to lead the SBC with a 3.58 earned run average (ERA). Junior Jeremy Strawn tossed eight shutout innings in a 1-0 win over Troy on April 27. The right hander is 3-2 with a 3.23 ERA in 11 starts this season.
Sophomore Austin Gomber has recorded four wins with a 2.92 ERA as the team's No. 1 starting pitcher.
Senior closer Hugh Adams leads the SBC with 13 saves and ranks sixth nationally in the statistical category. Junior Kevin Alexander is 2-3 with a 2.51 ERA in 16 appearances, while sophomore Bo Logan is 4-0 with a 2.39 ERA in 19 appearances this season.
UALR is 22-22 on the season and is 8-13 in conference action. The Trojans are coming off a 6-5 win over Stephen F. Austin on April 30. Blake Johnson anchors the team's offensive attack with a .320 batting average, seven home runs and 33 RBI. Bryson Thionnett has hit nine homers and has a team-high 36 RBI. UALR has hit 46 home runs on the season. Chance Cleveland is this week's SBC Pitcher of the Week after a complete-game shutout against Western Kentucky University on April 26. He is 5-6 with a 2.59 ERA for the season.
