Junior catcher Mike Spano takes a six-game hitting streak into Tuesday's game at Miami
Boca Raton, FL - The Florida Atlantic University baseball team wraps up its three-game season series with nationally ranked University of Miami on Tuesday, April 24, at 6 p.m. in Coral Gables. The Owls will be looking for their first win over the Hurricanes this season.
FAU stands 25-14 on the season and remains in first place in the Sun Belt Conference (SBC) following a 6-2 win over Arkansas State University on April 22. The team has a 13-3 league record.
Miami was ranked 24th in this week's Collegiate Baseball national poll, and have a 26-14 record after being swept by No. 2-ranked Florida State University in a three-game series on April 20-22.
The Hurricanes defeated FAU 10-5 on February 29 in Coral Gables and picked up an 8-5 victory on March 21 in Boca Raton. The Owls won the season series over Miami last year.
Individually, senior infielder Mike Albaladejoleads Florida Atlantic with a .364 batting average, 33 runs and 10 doubles. He is riding a five-game hitting streak and ranks second in the SBC with 55 hits.
Junior first baseman Mark Nelson had a two-run single that started a decisive five-run sixth-inning rally in the victory over Arkansas State. He has driven in 36 runs this season and has a .300 batting average. Nelson is tied with junior outfielder Corey Kellerwith six home runs.
On the mound, sophomore Kevin Alexander gets the starting assignment for the Owls, returning to the mound for the first time since a victory at Middle Tennessee State University on March 24. The right hander stands 4-0 on the season with a 2.01 earned run average. Also available for pitching chores could be freshman left hander Austin Gomber, who didn't pitch in the last weekend's rain-shortened series with Arkansas State. Gomber has a 3-1 record and 3.15 ERA.
Junior reliever R.J. Alvarez picked up his fourth victory of the season by pitching two scoreless innings on April 22. The right hander was named to the midseason watch list for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's "Stopper of the Year" Award. Alvarez is 4-0 with a 0.61 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 29.2 innings. Senior Ahmed Garciais another valuable bullpen option with a 2-0 record, 1.73 ERA and two saves in 20 appearances.n
Meanwhile, Miami is led by catcher Peter O'Brien, with a .354 batting average, 10 home runs, 38 runs batted in, 11 doubles and 31 runs. He has collected three hits, with one home run, in six at-bats against FAU already this spring. Third baseman Brad Fieger has been another thorn for the Owls, collecting six hits in 10 plate appearances. He is hitting .296 with 19 RBIs for the season. Outfielder Dale Carey is batting .289 at the plate this season.
