BOCA RATON, Fla. - Florida Atlantic University baseball catcher Levi Meyer and women's basketball guard Kimberly Smith have been named the 2013-14 Male and Female Student-Athlete of the Year by FAU Athletics.
The award is given annually to the top male and female performers based on competition, academics and community involvement. The duo received their awards today at FAU's 45th annual Honors Convocation.
Meyer, a captain on the FAU baseball team, is a senior in the Public Safety Administration program with a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.287. The Wichita, Kan. native was selected as one of two team captains by his teammates and coaches for his leadership and dedication to the baseball program.
Meyer hit .299 on the 2013 season and made 50 starts behind the plate for the Owls. Meyer belted five home runs and drove in 35 runs with 10 multi-RBI games. In the NCAA Regional Championship game, he hit a three-run home run in the 12th inning against the No. 1 team in the nation, North Carolina. Meyer put on an impressive offensive display to begin his senior campaign this season as the Owls earned two victories against Notre Dame. He went 8-for-11 on the weekend with seven RBI, three runs, two walks (one intentional), a double and his first career triple. Meyer recorded multiple hits in each game and had a pair of three-RBI outings. Meyer reached safely on six of his last seven plate appearances, driving in four runs in that span, and had an on-base percentage of .786 for the weekend.
He was named the Conference USA Player of the Week by College Sports Madness after the first week of the season and was named to the Johnny Bench Award watch list. That award is given annually to the nation's best catcher.
According to FAU Head Coach John McCormack, having Levi on the team is "like having another coach on the field." Meyer has spent time in the community helping the youth develop their skills. He has assisted the Boca Raton Little League in their tryouts for each of the last two years and has worked various little league camps each year since 2008.
"I think Levi is a great representative of FAU athletics and embodies everything we hold to be true," McCormack said.
Smith, a four-year member of the FAU women's basketball team, rewrote both the FAU and Conference USA record books in her final year as an Owl. She set seven individual records and led the Owls to set or tie an astounding 14 Conference USA team records.
Her 90 three-pointers broke the FAU record of 66 and her 197 career three-pointers ranks second all-time at FAU. She made a three-pointer in 31-consecutive games and her nine three-pointers at Tulsa on Feb. 8 broke the FAU record and tied the Conference USA record for most "3s" in a game. That night, she scored her career-high 33 points and led FAU to break the team's single-season record for most "3s" in a season. Her 957 career points ranks 10th all-time and her 460 rebounds puts her in ninth place in the FAU record books. She led Conference USA and ranked 18th in the nation in three-pointers per game. Kim had back-to-back double doubles against UAB and Tulsa, combining for 50 points and 20 rebounds in those games. This season, she led the Owls in scoring, steals, and rebounds and started every game. She also broke the Conference USA record with 58 3-pointers in league play in 2014. Smith earned second-team All-Conference USA for her efforts.
Off the court, Smith was one of five players named to the Conference USA All-Academic team with her 3.608 G.P.A. She is double-majoring in Social Studies Education and History. Her extensive community service includes volunteering at schools and senior communities around the Boca Raton area.
"Kim exemplifies what a student-athlete should be, she excels in just about everything she puts her mind to," FAU Head Coach Kellie Lewis-Jay said. "If we had a program built with people who possess the character, passion, work ethic and leadership of Kim, we would reach ultimate success. I am honored to have coached Kim and believe she is more than deserving to be named FAU Student-Athlete of the Year."
