Baseball Faces off Against UTSA at Home This Weekend
April 12, 2018

BOCA RATON, Fla.  The Florida Atlantic University baseball team will host a second consecutive Conference USA weekend set, with UTSA coming to town for three games beginning Friday night at FAU Baseball Stadium.

The Owls (24-8, 9-3 C-USA) were rained out Tuesday night at FGCU, but have swept each of their last two league series as part of a seven-game winning streak. UTSA (17-14, 6-5 C-USA) were anything but rained out in their midweek matchup, pouring it on against Prairie View A&M on Wednesday, 24-3. The Roadrunners took the opener against ranked Louisiana Tech the previous weekend, but lost each of the last two.

Currently, FAU is tied for the lead atop C-USA, with LA Tech also at 9-3. The Roadrunners are in sole possession of fourth place, two games behind 8-3 Southern Miss, and a half-game better than both FIU and UAB, each at 6-6.

UTSA is led hitting-wise by Ben Brookover (team-high .328 average, five home runs, 29 RBI, which is sixth in C-USA), Bryan Arias (.323, four home runs, 20 RBI) and Trent Bowles (.322, five home runs, 23 RBI, a league-leading 15 doubles). Friday night starter Karan Patel is 2-1 with a 3.13 ERA, and he limits opposing hitters to a .185 batting average, third-lowest in C-USA.

The Owls’ leading hitters remain Joe Montes (.338), David Miranda (.336) and Tyler Frank (.331). Frank is third in C-USA with 34 runs scored and is tied for second with both eight home runs and a .636 slugging percentage. Montes’ 45 hits ties for 10th, and Frank and Miranda are fifth and seventh in OBP at .460 and .455, respectively. FAU’s Friday starter, Jake Miednik, is among the conference’s best in wins (5, second), strikeouts (63, third), opposing BA (.197, fifth) and ERA (2.24, sixth).

Here are the probable starters for each of the three games:

  • Friday, 6:30 p.m.: Owls – Senior LHP Miednik (5-1, 2.24 ERA) vs. Roadrunners – Junior RHP Patel (2-1, 3.13 ERA)
  • Saturday, 4 p.m.: Owls – Junior RHP Vince Coletti (1-2, 3.67 ERA) vs. Roadrunners – Senior LHP Steven Dressler (4-1, 2.73 ERA)
  • Sunday, 12 p.m.: Owls – Sophomore RHP Mike Ruff (1-0, 1.93 ERA) vs. Roadrunners – TBA

The Owls denied UTSA a sweep last season by defeating the Roadrunners in the series finale in San Antonio, 10-0. FAU holds a 7-5 advantage in the all-time series, and has won all three games previously played in Boca Raton (May 6-8, 2016).
