Boca Raton, Fla. - Florida Atlantic University senior catcher Mike Spano has been named to the midseason Johnny Bench Watch List as the nation's top collegiate catcher. The award is presented annually by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission.
"This is a prestigious honor that Mike is excited about receiving," said John McCormack, FAU's head baseball coach. "We are happy for him. The organization does a fantastic job in Wichita promoting college baseball. Mike has meant a lot to this program, and has the earned the trust of all the team's pitchers and coaches. He has had a nice season and career for us."
Spano has thrown out 20 percent of opposing base stealers and has not committed an error defensively this spring season. He has started 22 of the team's 33 games.
Offensively, the Naples native is batting .260 with 16 runs batted in. He has also drawn 16 walks, scored six runs and reached base in 40 percent of his plate appearances.
FAU stands 22-11 on the season and is tied atop the Sun Belt Conference with an 8-4 league record. The team is scheduled to host Middle Tennessee State University in a three-game league series starting on Friday, April 12 at 6:30 p.m. from the FAU Baseball Stadium, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus.
