BOCA RATON, FL – Redshirt freshman Esteban Puerta of baseball and junior Samantha Messer of softball have been honored as Florida Atlantic University’s Student-Athletes of the Week after having standout performances last weekend.
Puerta led FAU to a victory in Gainesville over No. 12 Florida on Tuesday night. The Cooper City, Fla. native started 4-for-4 in the game and picked up a two-out RBI single in the sixth to tie the game, sending it to extra innings. On Saturday, he hit another two-out RBI to give the Owls a lead in the third inning at Marshall. Puerta ended his week with a 3-for-4 performance on Sunday, scoring three runs while driving in two. Puerta was also named Conference USA Hitter of the Week today.
FAU’s baseball team will host FGCU on Tuesday, April 8 at 6:30 p.m. Live stats will be available at fausports.com.
Messer pitched a complete game shutout in the Owls’ 1-0 win over FIU on Saturday. The Sarasota, Fla. native only gave up four hits in the contest and threw just 64 pitches (48 strikes) in the win. For the season, she is 12-5 with a team best 1.67 ERA. On the season, Messer has pitched 105 innings with 10 complete games. She has collected 66 strikeouts and has allowed opponents just a .219 batting average.
Softball will travel to Fort Myers this week, also facing FGCU, in a doubleheader with the first game beginning at 5 p.m. Live stats will be available at fausports.com.
