Boca Raton, FL - The first-place Florida Atlantic University baseball team looks to build upon its season-best, seven-game winning streak when it travels for a weekend series at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. The Owls are ranked No. 25 this week by Baseball America and are No. 30 by Collegiate Baseball.
The series begins on Friday, April 5 at 7 p.m. with other games scheduled on Saturday, April 6 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 7 at 2 p.m.
FAU is tied atop the Sun Belt Conference (SBC) with a 7-2 record. The team has won its last five league games, including a three-game sweep over previously nationally ranked University of South Alabama last weekend in Boca Raton.
The Owls are coming off a 7-6 win over Lynn University on Tuesday, April 2. The win improved the team's record to 20-9 for the season.
Offensively, freshman outfielder Brendon Sanger went 4-for-5, scored three runs and drove in three runs in Tuesday night's win. He also hit his first collegiate home run, a three-run blast in the second inning. Sanger leads the team with a .422 batting average.
Sophomore shortstop Mitch Morales is hitting at a .354 clip and has recorded 15 RBI and scored 16 runs. Senior outfielder Nathan Pittman leads the team with 10 stolen bases and is batting .311 from the leadoff position. Junior designated hitter/catcher Levi Meyer has a .300 average with 15 RBI.
FAU's pitching staff leads the SBC with a 2.98 earned run average (ERA). Anchoring the rotation is sophomore left hander Austin Gomber with a 3-1 record and a conference-best 1.75 ERA. Gomber, the team's No. 1 starter in the weekend rotationi, has also recorded 46 strikeouts on the season.
Senior Jake Meiers (2-2, 5.85 ERA) and junior Jeremy Strawn (2-1, 2.72 ERA) have rounded out the weekend rotation this season. Strawn tossed a complete-game shutout in Sunday's 3-0 win to complete the sweep against South Alabama.
In the bullpen, senior closer Hugh Adams leads the league and ranks third nationally with nine saves. Senior Michael Sylvestri is 3-0 with a 1.37 ERA and has 23 strikeouts when compared to just five walks. Sophomore Bo Logan earned the victory in relief on Tuesday night, improving to 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA for the season.
ULM, the defending conference tournament champions, has an 11-18 record this season and is coming off a 3-2 win in 11 innings over Grambling State University on Tuesday. The Warhawks are 1-8 in league play. Corben Green leads the team's offensive attack with a .308 batting average and three home runs. He also has driven in a team-best 14 runs. Cale Wine anchors the pitching rotation, posting a 3-4 record with a 2.08 ERA. The right hander has 33 strikeouts this season.
