BOCA RATON, FL - This past week two athletes’ performances guided their teams to victories over their opponents. One athlete took it upon himself to pitch a full game to even out a set against FIU after a loss the night before, while the other athlete’s play helped her team to the most wins in a season since 2004. This week, junior, Paul Davis from the baseball team and Justine Humair of the women’s tennis team are FAU’s Athletes of the Week.
After dropping the series opener against rival FIU, right hander Davis tied up the three-game set between the top two teams in the preseason poll on Saturday for the Owls. By throwing a nine-inning complete game victory over FIU, Davis struck out seven batters and held a potent FIU offensive attack in check by allowing seven hits. The junior college transfer leads the Sun Belt Conference with a 1.64 earned run average and stands 4-0 on the season. Davis has recorded 25 strikeouts on the season compared to just three walks.
Justine Humair had a strong showing this week helping the FAU women’s tennis team go 4-1. Humair went a combined 7-2 in doubles and singles action in the five team matches. Picking up her 11th victory of the season, Humair competed at the No. 1 singles position ending with a 4-1 mark. In all four of her singles victories she won in straight sets. As for doubles, Humair competed at the No. 2 position and went 3-1.
Eight sports will be in action this week for Florida Atlantic University. Men’s and women’s tennis will be competing in Boca Raton throughout the week, Baseball will play host to Middle Tennessee and the men’s golf team will have their annual Spring Break Championship at Gleneagles Country Club in Delray Beach, FL.
