Boca Raton, FL - A season-high eight strikeout performance has earned Florida Atlantic University baseball sophomore lefthander Austin Gomber the Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Pitcher of the Week Award, the conference office announced on Monday, March 18. The left hander pitched 7.1 scoreless innings in the Owls' victory over South Florida rival FIU in the opening weekend of conference play.
Gomber, a Winter Garden native, retired 11 batters in a row after recording back-to-back strikeouts to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning. He faced only one three-ball count the entire game to improve his season record to 2-1 and lowered his earned run average to a team-leading 1.68. He also leads the Owls in innings (33.1) and strikeouts (30).
Florida Atlantic's No. 1 starter was honored for the first time by the SBC, and becomes the third FAU player recognized by the conference this spring. Senior first baseman Mark Nelson was last week's Player of the Week, and senior pitcher Jeremy Strawn earned Pitcher of the Week honors in late February.
The Owls stand 13-8 on the season and will begin a three-game league series at Arkansas State University on Friday, March 22 at 7 p.m. from Jonesboro, Ark. Live audio and statistics of the games will be available at www.fausports.com.
Single-game tickets for remaining home games are available by contacting the FAU Ticket Office at 1-866-FAU-OWLS.
