Senior first baseman Mark Nelson leads the Owls with three home runs and 12 RBI for the season

Boca Raton, FL - The Florida Atlantic University baseball team will tune up for Sun Belt Conference (SBC) action with a two-game midweek series against the University of Maine. Games are scheduled on Tuesday, March 12 and Wednesday, March 13 at 6:30 p.m. from the FAU Baseball Stadium, 777 Glades Road on the Boca Raton campus.
FAU will begin defense of its 2012 SBC regular-season championship with a three-game home series against South Florida rival FIU, starting on Friday, March 15 at 6:30 p.m.
The Owls have a 10-6 record following winning two of three games of a home weekend series against the University of Toledo. The team hit three home runs to win the series-deciding game 7-5 on Sunday, March 10.
Two of the homers were hit by senior first baseman Mark Nelson, who also had a solo blast over the outfield fences at Florida A&M University on Tuesday, March 5. He has driven in 12 runs and legged out a team-best six doubles for the season, while his batting average is now up to .283. Nelson was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week for his offensive performance.
Senior outfielder Corey Keller leads the team with a .323 batting average, while sophomore shortstop Mitch Morales is batting .321 and has recorded seven two-out runs batted in this season. Junior outfielder Geoff Jimenez rounds out FAU's .300 hitters with a .303 batting average.
Pitching has continued to lead Florida Atlantic, compiling a 2.81 earned run average (ERA) and allowing just 42 walks in 144 innings. Sophomore Austin Gomber, the Friday-night starting pitcher, leads the team with 22 strikeouts in 26 innings and has a 1-1 record with a 2.08 ERA. The left hander has went seven innings in his last two starts against Coastal Carolina University (March 1) and Toledo (March 8).
Maine stands 8-10 on the season and has played games in Florida since February 21. The Black Bears are coming off a 13-7 win over Chicago State University on Sunday in Punta Gorda, Florida. The team has five players hitting .329 or better, led by Troy Black's .367 average. Sam Balzano has scored 18 runs and is hitting .333, while Scott Heath has driven in 13 runs. FAU and Maine have both defeated West Virginia University and Florida A&M, and lost to the University of Miami.
