Baseball Hosts First Three of Five-Game Homestand
March 8, 2018

BOCA RATON, Fla. The Florida Atlantic University baseball team is set to host their longest homestand of the 2018 season, as the next five games on the docket will take place at FAU Baseball Stadium, starting with three this weekend versus Seton Hall.

The Owls (8-4) were turned away from a possible series split against Oregon, losing the final two of a four-game set with the Ducks in Eugene. The team spent six days away from home on the trip, but will play five home games in the next six days before beginning Conference USA play.

The 1-2 punch of Jake Miednik and Kyle Marman continued their early-season success on the mound, with the former throwing a complete game in the opener against UO (allowing just six hits and two runs), and the latter combining with Mark Nowatnick for a Saturday shutout (scattering eight hits with 11 strikeouts). Miednik is now 2-1 with a 1.27 ERA, Marman is 3-0 and 0.46, and the two have combined for 57 strikeouts against five walks.

Offensively, junior shortstop Tyler Frank has a seven-game hitting streak and has 12 hits in his last 25 at-bats. He is the team leader in multiple categories, including batting average (.289), on-base percentage (.373) and runs scored (eight). Joe Montes is batting .277 and matches Frank with a team-best 13 hits, and Pedro Pages is next at .261, and was recently named to the official watch list for the 2018 Johnny Bench Award, presented to the best Division I catcher.

In first to Boca Raton during the homestand is Seton Hall (5-5), winners of their last two and four of five. The Pirates were 29-24 last season, and 10-8 in the Big East, finishing fourth of seven and advancing to the league’s postseason tournament. Rob Dadona is the current team leader in batting average at .400, followed by Matt Toke at .371. Toke adds two home runs and 12 RBI, both team highs.

These two teams have met up five times in history, all five in Boca Raton, with the Owls winning three. Most recently, in 2011, the Pirates took two of three, with the final game a 4-1 FAU victory on March 12 of that season.

Here are the probable starting matchups for the weekend series:

  • Friday, 6:30 p.m.: Owls – Senior LHP Jake Miednik (2-1, 1.27 ERA) vs. Pirates – Senior RHP Shane McCarthy (0-2, 7.36 ERA)
  • Saturday, 4 p.m.: Owls – Junior RHP Kyle Marman (3-0, 0.46 ERA) vs. Pirates – Redshirt Junior RHP Andrew Politi (0-2, 6.28 ERA)
  • Sunday, Noon: Owls – Junior RHP Vince Coletti (0-1, 3.52 ERA) vs. Pirates – TBA
