Boca Raton, FL - The Florida Atlantic University baseball team puts its three-game winning streak on the line when it hosts the University of Toledo in a three-game series, beginning Friday, March 8 at 6:30 p.m. from the FAU Baseball Stadium, 777 Glades Road on the Boca Raton campus.
FAU and Toledo are scheduled to continue the weekend series on Saturday, March 9 at 4 p.m. before battling on Sunday, March 10 at 1 p.m.
The Owls stand 8-5 on the season, with five of those victories coming at home. They are coming off a doubleheader sweep at Florida A&M University on Tuesday, March 6. The team scored 23 runs and had 28 hits in the two games.
Pitching has led the team early in the season, with the staff compiling a 2.46 earned run average (ERA), and having 116 strikeouts in 117 innings through the first 13 games. The starting pitchers have an impressive 2.29 ERA. Sophomore left hander Austin Gomber tops the weekend rotation with a 1-1 record and a 1.89 ERA in three starts. He is tied for team high honors with 16 strikeouts.
Junior right hander Jeremy Strawn was named the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week on February 25 after throwing eight shutout innings against the University of Alabama. Sunday's projected starter has a 1-0 record with a 1.40 ERA.
Senior Jake Meiers rounds out the weekend rotation with a 1-1 mark and a 3.60 ERA. The right hander had a career-high seven strikeouts against No. 10-ranked North Carolina State University on Saturday, March 2.
The bullpen is led by senior Hugh Adams with four saves. The right hander holds FAU's school record with 17 career saves.
Offensively, sophomore shortstop Mitch Morales is batting .362 and has had all seven of his runs batted in coming in two-out situations. Senior outfielder Corey Keller has legged out five doubles and is hitting .340 at the plate. Junior outfielder Geoff Jimenez rounds out the .300 hitters with a .318 batting average. Jimenez is tied for team high honors with four stolen bases.
Senior catcher Mike Spano had three hits in the nightcap of Tuesday's doubleheader against Florida A&M. The hits improved his batting average to .290, and he has driven in nine runs this season.
Toledo of the Mid-American Conference enters the weekend with a 3-7 record and is coming off a 9-8 win over Valparaiso University on Wednesday, March 6 during the team's Florida spring trip. The Rockets are the eighth different conference opponent that Florida Atlantic has faced this season. Friday's game will be the first meeting between the two programs.
