BOCA RATON, Fla. - Following his second straight superb showing on the mound, senior lefthanded pitcher Jake Miednik of the Florida Atlantic University baseball team was chosen as Conference USA Pitcher of the Week, announced Monday by the C-USA office.
Miednik set the tone for the Owls during their three-game series sweep of Delaware this past weekend. His 14 strikeouts against the Blue Hens in the opener on Friday night matched the most thrown by any FAU pitcher since 2009. He threw 7 1/3 innings, allowing just two hits (a bloop triple and bunt single), one earned run, and one walk.
Breaking down his strikeouts, the Parkland, Florida native had two or more in four different innings, and at least one strikeout in every full inning he pitched. He struck out eight of the nine possible UD hitters, with five incurring two or more. All told, Blue Hen hitters hit just .080 against him.
For the season, Miednik sports a 2-0 record, a sparkling 0.68 ERA, and 21 strikeouts against just three walks in 13 1/3 innings. Opposing batters are hitting .068, three hits in 44 at-bats, with one extra base hit, and his WHIP (walks+hits/innings pitched) is .045.
The Owls will play five games in six days, beginning Wednesday night as the team hosts Miami. Then, from Thursday-Monday, it's on to Eugene, Oregon, for four games at the University of Oregon.
