BOCA RATON, Fla. - Florida Atlantic University baseball junior Austin Gomber was named Pitcher of the Year and first team Conference USA Preseason All-Conference by the website "College Sports Madness." Fellow teammates Mitch Morales and Brendon Sanger earned second team honors.
"Preseason awards are a great honor, and I know the players are truly grateful when they receive them," said John McCormack, FAU's head baseball coach. "We have a great group of men and these honors are well deserved."
Gomber, a 6-foot-5-inch southpaw, returns after a sensational sophomore campaign. His 8-4 record led FAU and his ERA of 2.97 led the Sun Belt Conference. Gomber tallied 103 strikeouts and walked just 28 in his 106 innings of work.
Morales (pictured left), a junior and starting shortstop for the entire 2013 season, had the third highest team batting average at .301, ranking 29th in the Sun Belt Conference. He had 20 multiple hit games and eight multiple RBI games.
Sanger had a successful freshman season as a utility player, leading the team with a .347 batting average, ranking seventh in the Sun Belt Conference. He also had 13 extra base hits and three homeruns and was named the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
The FAU baseball team has been predicted to finish second in the 2014 Conference USA standings, as selected by league coaches.
FAU is ranked No. 24 in the Perfect Game preseason poll, 30th in the NCBWA poll, and is receiving votes in other national polls.
The Owls open their season on Saturday, Feb. 15, with a home doubleheader against Notre Dame. First pitches are scheduled for 1 and 6 p.m. at the FAU Baseball Stadium, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus. For ticket information, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS or visit FAUsports.com.
