Getting to Know the Remaining Home Non-Conference Baseball Opponents

Boca Raton, FL - Florida Atlantic University’s baseball team will prepare to defend last season’s Sun Belt Conference regular-season championship by facing opponents from several of the nation’s top conferences. These opponents will be among the 30 home games scheduled this spring at the FAU Stadium, 777 Glades Road on the Boca Raton campus.

The Owls will open the season February 15 with the first of a three-game weekend against the University of Cincinnati. will get you ready for the upcoming season by previewing some of the team’s non-conference opponents on the schedule during March. The first capsule here examined the February games.

FAU will host in-state foe UCF for Senior Day in the final week of the regular season. The Owls will honor eight seniors, including five three-year letter winners and fifth-year pitcher Hugh Adams.

Here are brief descriptions of the remaining spring non-conference opponents:

Friday, March 8 at 6:30 p.m.
Saturday, March 9 at 4 p.m.
Sunday, March 10 at 1 p.m.
After beginning the season with an eight-game home stand, the Owls begin another eight-game stretch of home games when it hosts this Mid-American Conference opponent. The series also marks the first-ever games between the two schools.
2012 Record: 26-29 (15-12 Mid-American)
Head Coach/Record/Year: Cory Mee/189-240/9th season
Top Returning Players: Catcher James Miglin is the team’s top returning positional player with a .274 batting average and five home runs; Pitcher Ryan Wilkinson went 7-4 with a 2.99 earned run average in 11 starts in 2012; Infielder/outfielder Anthony Smith legged out 10 doubles and scored 20 runs last season.


Tuesday, March 12 at 6:30 p.m.
Wednesday, March 13 at 6:30 p.m.
The midweek two-game series will serve as the final non-conference set before the Owls open Sun Belt Conference play by hosting FIU on March 15. FAU holds a 6-2 series edge over the Black Bears and will be playing the northern team for the first time since the 2007 season.
2012 Record: 28-28 (11-11 America East)
Head Coach/Record/Years: Steve Trimper/204-178-2 in seven seasons at Maine, 376-352-4 in 14 seasons overall
Returning Players: Infielder Michael Fransoso tied for team lead with five home runs and 18 doubles, while also posting a .327 batting average; Infielder Troy Black led Maine with a .338 batting average and was 17-of-19 in stolen base attempts; Pitcher Shaun Coughlin made 13 starts last season and had a 4-5 record with a 3.98 earned run average.

This game will mark the final home game for seniors Hugh Adams, Gregg Bennis, Corey Keller, Jake Meiers, Mark Nelson, Nathan Pittman, Mike Spano and Michael Sylvestri. 2012 Record: 45-17 (16-8 Conference USA)
Head Coach: Terry Rooney/139-97/5th season
Top returning players: Pitcher Ben Lively posted a 9-2 record, a 3.00 earned run average and 84 strikeouts in 13 starts; Infielder Chris Taladay drove in 49 runs and hit five home runs, while also hitting .298 at the plate; Pitcher Chris Matulis went 7-0 and had 62 strikeouts in 73.1 innings.
