Boca Raton, FL - Florida Atlantic University junior relief pitcher R.J. Alvarez has been named the 47th best collegiate prospect for this year's Major League Baseball Draft by the prestigious Baseball America magazine. He also has been ranked the top draft prospect in the Sun Belt Conference (SBC) by Perfect Game.
Alvarez ranked second on the 2011 FAU team with six victories and 72 strikeouts. He made 15 starts and helped lead the team to a 32-25 record and fourth-place finish in the SBC.
"R.J. is getting recognition that is well deserved. He has worked hard to prepare himself to possibly qualify for his ultimate dream, which is to play at the professional level," said John McCormack, FAU's head baseball coach. "We are proud of R.J's past accomplishments and look forward to him having another strong year on the mound for us this spring."
Alvarez, a 6-foot-1 junior right hander, has won nine games in his first two FAU seasons and recorded 121 strikeouts in 134 career innings. He went 3-1 as a freshman in 2010 as the Owls won the SBC regular-season championship and advanced to the championship round of the NCAA Division I Gainesville Regional.
Besides his FAU performances, Alvarez has caught the attention of major-league scouts in two productive summers as a relief pitcher for the Bourne Braves of the prestigious Cape Cod Collegiate League. He earned league all-star honors in 2010 and tossed a scoreless inning for the West team in a game played at historic Fenway Park in Boston. He had another strong season as a reliever last summer.
FAU begins the 2012 season against University of Alabama of the Southeastern Conference on Friday, February 17. The team's home opener will follow a week later, on Friday, February 24 at 6:30 p.m. against Manhattan College. It will begin a four-game weekend set.
