Jan. 27, 2014

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University baseball team has been ranked 24th in Perfect Game's Preseason Top 25 poll. Junior Austin Gomber and sophomore Brendon Sanger were selected to the Preseason All-Conference USA team.

"Anytime the program gets national recognition, it is great," said FAU Head Coach John McCormack. "It is a testament to good players and coaches."

The Owls finished 42-22 in 2013 and advanced to the championship game of the NCAA Regional at North Carolina.

FAU returns four starting pitchers from 2013, including Gomber, a 6-foot-5-inch lefty from Winter Garden. As a sophomore, he led the Sun Belt Conference with a 2.97 ERA last season, striking out 103 while walking just 28. As a sophomore, Gomber tallied a record of 8-4 with 106 innings pitched. He is also tabbed as one of the top prospects in 2014 and is projected to be drafted in the third to fifth rounds of the MLB Draft in June.

Sophomore outfielder/infielder Brendon Sanger also was named to the all-conference team after his fantastic freshman campaign. Last year, Sanger led FAU with a .347 batting average. He drove in 28 runs and scored 49 of his own. The Fort Myers native committed just two errors in his 51 games and owned an on-base percentage of .436.

Junior infielder Mitch Morales was also named as one of the top prospects for Conference USA for 2014. The Wellington native is listed as No. 16 in the class and is projected to be drafted in the sixth to 12th rounds. Morales hit .301 in 2013 with eight doubles. He is the only player to start each of FAU's 64 games, driving in 30 runs while scoring 39.

FAU's 2014 regular-season schedule features series with three other teams ranked in the top 25. The Owls will take on the 15th ranked Florida Gators in Gainesville on Tuesday, April 1 and will play at No. 17 Rice in a three-game conference series Friday, March 21 through Sunday, March 23. FAU will play No. 20 Miami in Coral Gables on Wednesday, Feb. 19 and April 16, and will host the Hurricanes on April 23.

The Owls open their season on Saturday, Feb. 15 with a home doubleheader against Notre Dame. First pitches are scheduled for 1 and 6 p.m. at the FAU Baseball Stadium, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus. For ticket information, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS or visit FAUSports.com.
